Date of birth:
17 November 1969
The name of the law school from which you received your first law degree:
Government Law College, University of Mumbai
Current law firm and office:
Majmudar & Partners, Mumbai
Position within the firm:
Key practice areas:
Corporate/M&A, Tax, Structuring and Finance
Why you chose to focus in these areas:
Corporate Law in India has been a boom sector over the last 20 years following the liberalisation of the Indian economy. I was exposed to it at an early stage in my career and enjoy the adrenaline rush that running and closing a deal gives. Finance goes hand in hand with M&A, especially as most large deals have a leverage component. Our firm has a tradition of finance practice, and I have been involved in it from my training days. The last five to seven years have seen significant tax law changes in India that have significantly impacted the M&A landscape in India. Without getting into tax structures, it is impossible to close deals. Additionally, I studied tax law in depth as a part of the curriculum for the solicitors exam (which is conducted only in Mumbai). This helps me in my tax advisory work.
Details of the matter that you have worked on in your career to date that you are most proud of, and why:
I am most proud of a significant telecom deal that I worked on which involved very tricky regulatory issues and substantial client and counter party management skills. Here, I was both, lawyer and counsellor, and played a major role in closing an otherwise difficult deal.
The name of any more senior lawyers that you look up to or consider to be mentors:
