Following months of research and interviews with legal and business professionals around the world, we compiled a list containing 40 lawyers admitted to practise in India who were under the age of 45 on 31 March 2013 that we recognise as among the most highly regarded in the country.
The selected lawyers were then sent a brief questionnaire relating to their background and career to date (answers can be viewed by clicking on the lawyers’ names).
Thirteen of the lawyers are the founding or managing partners of their firms – a fact that challenges the traditional view of the law firm model in India, where a small group of elder statesmen preside over a multigenerational family-run firm. Nine of the lawyers on the list are from small firms that don’t currently feature in the Indian Lawyer 250 directory, attesting to the sophistication of the new breed of Indian firms. The list is male-dominated, however, with only eight women featuring compared with 32 men.
It is the nature of lists such as these to engender debate and we would be keen to hear any comments you might have on the list – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Finally, we would like to sign off by offering our congratulations to the 40 lawyers we identify, and our thanks to the many individuals around the world who contributed to the research.
