Even after stepping down as head of fellow Indian Lawyer 250 firm J Sagar Associates, Jyoti Sagar still serves as a senior partner of K&S Partners, which acts as a standalone sister firm to JSA. Focused solely on IP matters, K&S has developed a “very strong” reputation in India and overseas, with most of its work having an international leaning.
Sagar is responsible for the overall running of the firm and brings in-depth knowledge of IP law to the role. Co-founder D Calab Gabriel heads the firm’s patent practice and regularly acting for foreign and domestic corporates in the life sciences sector. He also counts the Indian government among his past clients. Fellow co-founders Rajendra Kumar and Kenneth Benjamin lead the trademark and prosecution practices, respectively, and are internationally recognised.
K&S handles trademark protection work for such clients as PepsiCo, Gap, Procter & Gamble, Unicharm Corporation, Caterpillar and Akzo Nobel. Important patent clients include IBM, New England Biolab, Qualcomm, Sony and Tata Motors. The firm recently represented Red Chillies Entertainment, a Mumbai-based film company, on issues related to copyright protection for one of its upcoming films in light of the 2012 amendments to the Indian Copyright Act. K&S also acted for Pfizer in relation to their cancer drug Sutent/Sunitinib, which had its patent revoked by the Indian Patent Office, resulting in a successful appeal before the IP Appellate Board. Other prominent recent clients include Sarin Technologies, Stempeutics and Unique Biotech.
