Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy

Editorial analysis

Milbank has been active in India for more than 20 years, during which time it has focused on assisting clients in complex transactions, including acting for many of the larger Indian companies in significant cross-border capital raising deals, acquisitions and litigation and arbitration disputes.

Despite losing of counsel Sanjeet Malik in the early months of 2013, it has nevertheless been a strong year for the India group. The team recently represented Bharti Airtel in its $8.3 billion dollar and rupee financing for its $10.7 billion acquisition of the Zain Group’s operations in 15 African countries, and was active in several major international equity and debt offerings involving Indian issuers, including Tata Steel’s $770 million equity offering and Southern Petrochemical Industries’ $120 million global offering of floating rate notes.

Glenn Gerstell serves as the managing partner of the Washington DC office and heads the firm’s global communications practice and its unique tax account analysis and recovery services practice, as well as being a coordinator of the India group. He is active in crossborder infrastructure development, insolvencies and restructurings, and mergers and acquisitions in various industries, with a particular emphasis on the emerging markets. David Zemans meanwhile acts as managing partner of Milbank’s Asia Practice, through which he has become “very well known and respected” in India.
