Simmons & Simmons

Editorial analysis

Simmons & Simmons has had a dedicated India practice for 20 years, during which time it has established close working relationships with local players DSK Legal, Khaitan & Co and Majmudar & Partners, all of which earn listings in these pages. The 10-lawyer team is led by London partners Colin Leaver and Chris Horton, who are both known for their corporate expertise – an area of practice for which the group as a whole comes “highly recommended”. Capital markets work with Indian companies, advice to international energy and infrastructure groups setting up in India, and work for Indian banks and corporates on their operations in Germany are also strong elements of the team’s work. It has also become the firm of choice for several Japanese companies looking to invest in India.

In the past year the firm has represented Ishaan Real Estate on the proposed sale of its property interests to Chalet Hotels and various other entities connected to K Raheja Corp for an aggregate consideration of approximately £70.3m and the subsequent delisting and winding up of Ishaan; acted for JP Morgan Cazenove and Morgan Stanley International as joint sponsors to Vedanta Resources on the share merger of its group companies Sesa Goa and Sterlite Industries (India); and assisted ONGC Videsh Limited on the $2.64bn acquisition of a 10 per cent participating interest in the Rovuma Offshore Block in Mozambique.
