Dr Bakhtiar S Bhesania joined M/s Mulla & Mulla & Craigie Blunt & Caroe in early 1958 and has been a partner of Mulla & Mulla & Craigie Blunt & Caroe since 1972. His special spheres of practice include admiralty and port laws, commercial litigation, arbitration, conveyancing and corporate laws. He is a member of the International Council of Jurists from 2010 to 2015 and is also a former member of the committee appointed by the central government for drafting the Admiralty Law of India.
Dr Bhesania was a lecturer on the LLM course at the University of Mumbai for over six years, and is an ex-member of the Indian Merchants Chamber and the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He is the author of Commentaries on the Major Port Trusts Act 1963.
His major clients include the trustees of the port of Mumbai and other major ports of India for whom he drafts documents for the expansion of ports on a build, operate and transfer basis, besides general litigation.
In the field of arbitration he has acted as a sole arbitrator for Tata Consultancy Services for over 10 years in respect of breach of sole service agreements between the company and its employees. He is on the panel of arbitrators maintained by the Indian Chamber of Arbitration, Delhi. He has also given evidence in foreign courts as an expert on shipping law and breach of service contracts.
He has been a member of the board of the Bank of Tokyo for several years and has advised national and international banks, including the Bank of Singapore, on foreign-currency non-residents’ accounts and deposits.
