      Mr D M Popat has been an actively practising advocate since 1955 and an attorney at law (solicitor) since 1958. He is a triple graduate of the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) in three faculties: arts, commerce and law. Since 1969, he has been a partner of the firm M/s Mulla & Mulla & Craigie Blunt & Caroe, advocates, solicitors & notaries, where he is currently the most senior partner.

      Mr Popat has been representing India since 2000 as a member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris and is also a nominee on the ICC’s commission on international arbitration and other task forces. He is a member of the executive committee of ICC – India, and a member of the national committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) since several years in the category of expert in economic/law/accounts and consultancy.

      He has been a member of the governing body of the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) since 1993, being a foundation member. He is on the ICA’s maritime arbitration committee and is chairman of the (western) Regional Office (Mumbai chapter) of ICA.

      Mr Popat has been a member of the managing committee of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC) and chairman of IMC’s court of arbitration and conciliation committee for several years. He was, for many years, chairman of IMC’s experts committee on law: review, reforms and rationalisation.

      He is a committee member and former vice president of the Bombay Incorporated Law Society (association of solicitors). He has been on the governing bodies/boards of various professional, trade and business organisations and corporate entities/companies.

      Mr Popat’s special areas of practice are commercial and corporate laws, real estate, litigation, arbitration (especially international commercial arbitration) and foreign collaboration matters.

      Mr Popat has been identified as a “resource person” in the field of arbitration by the National Judicial Academy, India. He has been identified as a leading lawyer and expert by several legal publication/organisations.
